Marathi, a language spoken in the west Indian state of Maharashtra, is the 4th most spoken language as a mother tongue in India. Marathi evolved from Sanskrit through Maharashtri Prakrit, an ancient and medieval language.

The Marathi language can be traced back to the common root of Indo-European languages, but its particular origins are found before the 10th Century, with the rise of the Jadhava or Seuna dynasty who adopted it as a court language. Marathi was used by some religious sects to preach their doctrines, which also explains the language's spread and influence.

Why not give your dog a name from a language as historically important and rich as Marathi? Moreover, you can choose any name for a male or a female dog.

Let's see if any of these names meet your fancy - and suit your pet.

Laasak (लासक) which means "dancer" in Marathi is a perfect choice for a playful dog; if it is clever at learning tricks, perhaps Laayak (लायक) is better, as it means “clever” or “capable” in Marathi. Choose Laghun (लघुन) if you want to select a name that means “quick” and that is what your dog is when it comes to knowing the rules.

If your dog is like a wave of joy for you, consider naming it Lahar (लहर) after the sea. If your dog is a shy, endearing and bashful one, some Marathi names which mean exactly that include Lajjak (लज्जक), Lajjan (लज्जान) and Lajjit (लज्जित).

If you are aiming for a name to capture a forceful personality, consider Laksh (लक्ष) which means aim or target. If your dog wins a lot of popularity and acclaim easily, it should be named Lakshanya (लक्षन्य) or one who achieves.

For a pure-minded and loving dog, the perfect Marathi name is Kaarin (कारीन). Another smart name is Kaash (काश) which means "appearance". Adding luster to your home and being a ray of sunshine, your dog can also be named Kaashik (काशिक) or the shining one.

Another great name for the perfect guard dog is Kaditula (कदितुला) which means “sword” in Marathi. Perhaps your dog is a star performer: Consider naming it Kahkashan (कह्काशन), another name for the stars.

A good Marathi name for a peaceful dog is Kailas (कैलास). If you have a penchant for an unusual name and are fond of flowers, consider Kairav (कैरव) which means white lotus in Marathi. If your dog is a true blue hero for you, the name to choose is Kaivalya (कैवल्य) which means salvation.

If your dog's nature is ever-changing, consider the name Kaladhar (कलाधर) or one who shows different phases. If you have an intelligent dog, consider naming it Kalap (कलाप) which means “wise” or Kalapak ( कलापक) which means skillful.

If your dog is a good-natured, sweet chap or lass, you should name it Maadhav (माधव) which means “sweet like honey” in Marathi. If it is a brave little dog, choose Maahir (माहिर) which stands for “brave” in Marathi. If your dog is precious, choose Maaksharth (माक्षार्थ), a name for “precious to the mother.” If your dog is fond of music and loves to sing along when it hears a good tune, the name for your dog is Maalav (मालव).

If your dog is a self-respecting being, the best name is Maan (मान) or “respect.” Another great name is Maanas (मानस) which means power. A really fitting name is also Maandhan (मानधन) or “rich in honor.” Some other great Marathi names for dogs are Maanik (मानिक) meaning “ruby” or Maanikya (मानीक्या) which is a jewel - perfect for such a pearl among oysters. If your dog is a brave heart, the perfect name is Maanvir (मान्वीर).
