Although it is generally known as the Peruvian Hairless dog, this breed has a variety of names including Perro Sin Pelo de Perú, Inca Hairless Dog, Viringo, Peruvian Inca Orchid or Calato. It is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, as depictions of similar dogs appear on objects from the 8th Century AD.

As is the case with the Chinese Crested dog, Peruvian Hairless dogs can be born with or without hair. Some dogs of this breed also have some hair on their head. Unfortunately, and because of the popularity of the variety without body hair, certified breeders are increasingly choosing to ignore the coated variety of the Peruvian Hairless breed. This practice means that future generations may suffer serious genetic problems because of inbreeding.

However, the hairless variety is perfect for those suffering from serious allergies and it also prevents the dog from suffering from a flea infestation.
