What is acariasis?

The term acariasis refers to a mite infection: as you know, mites area type of arthropod parasites. Such an infection can be exogenous and cause external manifestations, such as acariasis in plumage, but it can also be internal and cause a more severe clinical condition such as respiratory acariasis.

All birds can contract acariasis in their plumage, although the mite species will depend on the type of bird. For example, pigeons are especially affected by the mite families Sarcoptidae and Trombodidae, while canaries are most affected by the mite Enemidocoptes mutans. The parasites that cause acariasis in plumage do so through the subcutaneous skin.

While it is important to treat this disease, it is usually not too serious for the bird. However, each case must be assessed individually.
