Guinea pigs are very sociable animals, and these mammals are accustomed to live in small groups amongst nature. Therefore, it is not advisable to have a single guinea pig if you want to enjoy a happy animal. In case you want to have more than one, ideally choose two females or two males. Guinea pigs live between four and eight years if we offer them all their necessary care. A cage with enough space to move freely, at least 120 x 50 x 45 cm according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, is essential to ensure their happiness. Also, it is essential to verify that the animal always has hay and enjoys fruits and vegetables daily.

Despite being sociable animals among themselves, guinea pigs are very timid with the rest. The explanation is very simple, guinea pigs always remain hidden to avoid the arrival of predators. Therefore, those adopted as adults may have difficulties in relating to humans, but with patience and love everything is possible.

Guinea pigs that are accustomed to human contact since babies are usually very affectionate and enjoy caresses and all kinds of attentions. However, this does not mean that they don't need a hiding place to isolate themselves when they need it. Therefore, it is important to place in your home a suitable cage so that your pet can go to it when they want to feel covered, safe and secluded. We know that it can often be frustrating to see how your guinea pig stays hidden for hours. But, if you offer them outings during the day you will see that when you approach them, they will come to greet you with enthusiasm.

The trust of a guinea pig is not something that is easily achieved, since this animal needs to be conquered with patience and time. And nothing is better than applying positive reinforcement techniques, offering small pieces of fruits, vegetables, legumes..., so that they approach voluntarily and relate this to good stimuli.
