Is homemade food good for your dog?

Ensuring a healthy diet for their dog is the owner's responsibility, as it directly affects the animal's health. Therefore, if don't you have a lot of knowledge about dog food, it is preferable to base its diet on feed, since this kind of store-bought meal meets all your dog's needs. Here you can learn all about combining homemade food with bought food for dogs.

Even so, you can occasionally offer your dog homemade food - once a week is a good ratio. Before doing so, though, you must make sure you're familiar with the forbidden fruits and vegetables for dogs, and you must remember never to give your pet chocolate under any circumstances.

Baking ingredients suitable for dogs

Many bakeries and patisseries on the rise are following a new trend: Canine baking. A bakery that offers treats for dogs must inform you that there are no problems with the ingredients used.

What ingredients are used in cookies for dogs?

  • Whole wheat: In the absence of white flour or yeast to make the biscuit dough, whole wheat has very beneficial properties. It is used, among other things, to improve digestion. It makes your dog feel fuller so it won't feel that it needs to eat more, generally reducing anxiety.
  • Honey and cinnamon: Chocolate is usually the star ingredient in most human pastries, but it can be extremely harmful to your dog. Still, you can also find other equally sweet and tasty ingredients. Honey is really good for certain pains, and cinnamon is recommended for older dogs. Always give it in small proportions.
  • Cheddar cheese and natural yogurt: These two ingredients aren't an obvious combination, but you should know that they are very beneficial because both provide calcium and boost the dog's immune system. Milk is harmful to dogs because they do not digest lactose well, but natural yogurt has no lactose.
  • Chicken liver: Of course, don't forget the meat in these dog cookies! Chicken liver is very good for muscle development.
  • Tuna and sardines: Fish is also good, even though it seems rare to integrate it into cakes and biscuits.
  • Fruit: Banana, orange, coconut and apple are beneficial not only for their vitamins but also for their properties that help your dog have a good coat and oral hygiene.
  • Vegetables: This ingredient may seem less attractive. Even if spinach, broccoli, peas, carrots are unappetizing for our four-legged friends - as they are for many humans - they are actually good for their diet.
  • Eggs: They should be given to dogs in moderation, not more than once a week. However, eggs are a fantastic food for older dogs and they will make your pet's coat shiny.

Cookies for dogs: Recipe

These are the necessary ingredients to make homemade dog cookies. We have decided to use the following products:

  • Whole wheat
  • Egg
  • Honey
  • Apple
  • Natural yogurt

It is not a problem if you prefer to use other ingredients, as we have explained before. You know your pet's favorite food better than anyone, so you can come up with something to get an even better reaction.

Preparing the cookie dough

To begin with, prepare the cookie dough for your dog. You only have to mix together wheat flour (150 grams), an egg and a tablespoon of honey. You can add the whole egg with shell and all, well crushed, as an extra intake of calcium. Of course, remember to clean it with water before.

Work the cookie dough for a while until you get a smooth, thick texture. Once finished, roll it out with a rolling pin.

It's time to decide the shape of the biscuits: Hearts, stars, circles, bones... Use a cookie cutter or get creative.

Finally, bake the dog cookies for 15 minutes at a temperature of 200º C (390º F). You must ensure that the dough doesn't remain raw so that your dog is able to digest it better.

Meanwhile, make a cream with plain yogurt (never sweetened) and small pieces of apple. If you prefer to use another type of accompaniment or want to use yogurt alone, that is no problem.

Let the biscuits stand to cool. When they are ready, take two at a time and add the yogurt cream to one side, making a sandwich. Ready!
