How to trim your rabbit's nails

Trimming your rabbit's nails should become a part of their grooming routine as it's important for their health and hygiene. As we've previously mentioned, this can be done by a professional or by their caregiver at home. If you want to safely cut your rabbit's nails at home, you will need the following supplies:

  • Nail clippers for rabbits (or for cats)
  • A towel
  • Stypic powder (in case you cut it too short)
  • Healthy treat for your rabbit

Now that you've got everything you need, follow these easy steps to safely trim your rabbit's nails:

  1. Gather your supplies and a helper to hold your rabbit for you.
  2. Have the holder wrap your rabbit with a towel and calm them down.
  3. Now you can begin clipping your rabbit's nails. Remember to only clip the tip of the nail in order to not get into your rabbit's quick and making them bleed.
  4. If you do cut too deep and your rabbit begins bleeding, don't worry. Simply apply some of the stypic powder to the bleeding nail. This powder contains a numbing agent to provide relief to your rabbit and the nail will grow out fairly quickly. If you did cut your rabbit's nail too short, it's best to contact your veterinarian.
  5. Now, simply finish cutting all of their nails.
  6. Once you are done, make sure all of their nails are okay and not bleeding.
  7. Now you can put your rabbit down again.
  8. Don't forget to give your rabbit a healthy treat for being patient.
