What are the nutritional requirements of a hedgehog?

In its natural habitat, a hedgehog feeds on worms, snails, insects, mushrooms, fruits, eggs... A hedgehog is an omnivorous animal. To ensure that your hedgehog's nutritional requirements are met, you should provide:

  • Fat: Always in low quantity.
  • Protein: It should make up 20% of its diet.
  • Fiber: Essential - at least 15% of its diet.
  • Other: Calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus...

How to feed a pet hedgehog:

One way to feed your hedgehog is to buy specific ready-made feed designed for hedgehogs. Feeding your hedgehog this type of food ensures that their basic nutritional requirements are met.

On the other hand, you could provide feed that is more akin to what it finds in the wild. To do this, go to a specialized pet store and buy some worms (mealworms), egg, mixed fruit and mushrooms. You can also offer boiled chicken, salmon or turkey.

In addition to their protein, fat and fiber requirements, hedgehogs also need plenty of fruits and a variety of vegetables to ensure they consume enough vitamins. You can feed your hedgehog the following fruit:

  • Salt
  • Fried food

These products are not suitable for your hedgehog, as your pet cannot digest them properly. Do not include any sugar, excessive salt or fried foods of any kind in your hedgehog's diet.

Other foods that you should not give your hedgehog are grapes and raisins because these are harmful to their kidneys. Meanwhile, onions can cause anemia and some raw vegetables can cause choking: boil them before serving.
