Vegetarian Recipes for Dogs

We all want and deserve to eat tasty and healthy food. We should give our pets the same treatment we give ourselves. Although dry dog food may be the most natural and of the highest quality, it will never be as delicious and healthy as a home dish.
Let's talk about a vegetarian diet for dogs. Supplementing our dog's 100% carnivorous diet for a diet based on veggies or 'greens' is a safe, healthy and rich alternative that will bring many benefits to your best friend's health. Particularly if you opt for organic food choices.
If you don't know where to start, read this AnimalWised article. We will help you delve into the canine vegetarian world with some vegetarian recipes for dogs!
1. Vegetable stew
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large sweet pepper, sliced
- 1 medium courgette, sliced
- 1 medium yellow squash sliced
- 1 medium eggplant, peeled and diced
- 1 potato, peeled and diced
- 1 teaspoon oregano or basil
Heat the oil for 2 mins on medium. Then add all the vegetables and mix well. Add 3 cups of water, bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat and let simmer for 30 minutes. Add seasoning to taste. Cook 15 minutes over low heat until the stew us thick and let it cool. If you want you can add a touch of gluten free grated cheese. Or even a vegan and dairy-free cheese.
2. Rice balls and apple
- 1 beaten egg
- 1/3 cup apple sauce
- 1 cup of soft cooked vegetables (that you can crush with a fork). You can use vegetables such as courgette, carrots or potatoes.
- 1 cup cooked brown rice
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Then oil a tray. With the hand or a teaspoon collect the the mixture to make small balls and place them on the tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes, or until lightly browned and firm. Let cool and then store in the refrigerator. These can be used as delicious treats for your pet!
3. Vegetarian biscuits
- 1/2 cup plain margarine
- 3 tablespoons of honey (or agave)
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup carob powder (very healthy and special for desserts)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Mix the margarine and the honey (or agave) well. Add the remaining ingredients and beat until the mixture comes together. Have the tray ready, greased and to hand. With the hand or a teaspoon collect the the mixture to make small balls shape them as you like and place them on the tray. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Allow to settle and cool completely.
Baking powder is not great for dogs on its own, but in this recipe, the small amount will not cause your dog any harm. This is especially so after baking.
4. Carrot delight
- 3 cups chopped parsley
- 1/4 cup carrots, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 to 1 cup water
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking tray. Mix the carrots and oil. Separately combine all other dry ingredients (flours and powders) and add to vegetables. Gradually add 1/2 cup water, mixing well. Make damp but not wet dough. If necessary add a little more water. Knead for a couple of minutes.
Then stretch the dough to a thickness of 1.5 cm Cut the shapes (you can use a biscuit mould or glass) and transfer them to the baking sheet. Bake for 20-30 minutes until golden brown and biscuits have hardened slightly. (Do not worry, they will harden more when cooled.) Remove from the oven and quickly store in an airtight container. Remember that you can give them any shape you want!
