Names for Turtles - Male, Female and Unisex

Turtles are pets that usually don't interact excessively with the people who adopt them, but their adorable appearance is irresistable. Because we won't often have to call their name, like you would with a dog, we have the freedom to choose longer, more creative names.

If we give them phonetically appropriate names, give them treats, and maintain patience, perhaps our turtle will approach us confidently to claim their food.

AnimalWised will suggest different names for male, female and unisex turtles. Pick your favorite!

Tortoises

Land turtles (tortoises) interact somewhat more than freshwater turtles. Although both appreciate and recognize the strange being that feeds them, tortoises have a more vivacious temperament than their aquatic counterparts.

When choosing a name, if the turtle is young, make sure to choose a name that will match them when they are older - it must be suitable for them during many, many years.

Freshwater turtles

Freshwater turtles interact very little with humans. Only the being that feeds them on a daily basis sparks some kind of interest in them. Freshwater turtles are flatter and have more hydrodynamic contours than their terrestrial counterparts.

I have a Male Redfoot and I named him after my little sister Fred. Then I have a Female Herman's tortoise and I liked the name Frank.( Not Frankie) Can you tell me how does a tortoise learn to climb chicken wire? My female does this.

Hi Becky,

This answer may sound like a joke, but it's also accurate. How do turtles learn to climb chicken wire? Slowly! We might not think of turtles as being very nimble or acrobatic, but it is not uncommon for turtles to climb chain fences. They may move slow, but they have the strength to hold their own body weight. If a snapping turtle can snap a branch with its mouth, it shows they have strength in there somewhere.

However, their limbs are not very agile. This means they will only be able to climb certain structures and they may not be able to do this very well. Going over the top of the fence, however, might be even more difficult. This is because the length of their bodies and the distance between their front and hind legs makes it difficult to pivot over a sharp point. We imagine it would be near impossible for them to climb over a flat wall surface.
