Vaccinations for dogs

To begin with, we must explain what vaccines for dogs are and what they are used for. Vaccinations for dogs are pharmacological preparations of variable compositions that are used to stimulate a dog’s immune system. Each vaccine aims to stimulate, in a controlled way, a canine disease, which allows the animal to create necessary defenses against it.

Therefore, if at any time a dog contracts a pathology naturally, their body can immediately eliminate this pathogen or, at least, the disease will occur more mildly. Diseases for which canines vaccines exist are usually very serious and contagious. If these diseases or viruses make contact with an unvaccinated dog, it is unlikely that they will have enough time to generate the necessary defenses. The risk of death therefore increases, hence the importance of vaccinating your dog.

A dog’s first vaccine is given between 6-8 weeks of life, specifically applied to protect a puppy against viruses or diseases carried by the mother. A veterinarian will decide, depending on the immune status and circumstances of the puppy, the appropriate date of this first injection. Vaccinations for puppies are usually numerous, making sure that the puppy receives maximum protection.

Canine vaccines may contain fragments of viruses, inactivated viruses or recombinant DNA. They are also classified according to the amount of diseases with which they protect against. For example, there are monovalent and bivalent vaccines, which defend against one or two pathologies. Trivalent vaccines for dogs and tetravalent vaccines for dogs are, however, more common. A polycalent vaccine for dogs is the highest acting vaccine type, which offers the ability to fight against more than four pathogens.

Hi Tammy,

It could be a temporary reaction, but if you have any doubts, you should always contact the vet. It could be a rear-end paralysis which is associated with some rabies vaccines as an unlikely side-effect. This usually clears up, but it's best to speak to the vet just in case.

After receiving this 3 year booster, my 14 year old has mobility problems. He panted, and walked around the house all day for 2 days. He was unable to jump up on couch, and had difficulty getting up and lying down. He was fine before the vaccine and walked 1 mile on the morning of the day of his appointment. . . He had a very mild arthritis. The vet prescribed Dasuquinn and a 2 day supply of Rimadyl. He seemed somewhat better today, but still not himself.

Hi Susan,

Your dog is 14 which is considered old age in dogs. It is amazing they have been able to share so much time with you in good health, but they will simply start to deteriorate as they get older, especially with muscles, bones and joints. The vaccination is very unlikely to have had anything to do with this issue.
