Choosing parrot names

Although we may only think about dogs when training animals, parrots are much smarter than many give them credit for. In the wild, baby parrots learn their names in the nest. Although parrots can mimic sounds humans make, this does not mean they give themselves parrot names in English. Instead, they distinguish between the different bird calls their parents make and start using this sound themselves[1].

When a bird is in a domestic setting, they will be able to learn the name you choose for them. The ability to learn will depend on the species. For example, the African grey parrot are particularly well-known for their intelligence. The blue parrot or blue macaw are also very clever.

You can use their intelligence to give them parrot names. For example, you could call them Einstein or be funny and give them a name which sounds really silly, like fluffy. Some of the best parrot names are funny and ironic ones. Famous parrots can also provide inspiration. For example, the Disney character Iago from Aladdin is a common pet parrot name.

Parrots are also related to pirate culture, old and new. Perhaps the most famous pirate parrot name is Polly, but you can get inventive. If you are a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, then you could call you parrot Pierogi after the famous Pierogi Race they have at their stadium. Look at our article on names of famous parrots for more.

Whatever parrot name your choose for your bird, it is important to remember that the name is going to be a major part of your interaction. Parrots can develop very serious attachments and strong bonds with their owners. They also respond very well to training. Choose a name which is memorable and is no longer and 2 or 3 syllables, so the parrot can remember it easily. Also, don't use a name which can be easily confused with other names regularly used in the home.

Names to suit your parrot

When you choosing a new name for your parrot, there are different considerations you should make. While a unique parrot name might be interesting and give you something to talk about when you have guests over, you and your parrot are the ones who have to live with it. For this reason, you should choose one which is suitable over one which is ‘unique’. Here are some hints and tips to help you choose:

  • Length: parrots deserve unique names thanks to their rarefied place in the animal kingdom. While other birds have the ability, parrots are particularly well known for mimicking human speech. If you want them to repeat their own name, you probably shouldn't make it too long. This could get boring for both you and your bird pal.
  • Species: there are different types of parrot, so you should take this into consideration when choosing a name for your pet bird. African grey parrots have lots of presence despite their lack of color, so something regal might work. Lovebirds are beautiful, but maybe you're cynical and want to give them an ironic name. Macaws are big, cockatiels are smaller, cockatoos have a yellow top (like a crown) and parakeets are very diverse. Have a think!
  • Lifestyle: if there is something in your life you are passionate about (other than parrots), you can use your favorite hobbies, musicians, actors, sports teams or whatever as a source of inspiration.
  • Events: if you are taking some time to choose your name, then you can see what formative moments might be used for inspiration. Just as an example, if the first time you put them in their cage, you can call them Buster (like Buster Keaton). Think back and see if this helps.
  • Place: either the place you got them or if there is something about the parrot which inspires you, geography can be helpful. Check out this article on Italian names for cats to see what we mean.

I have a parakeet I named Peridot after the gemstone. She is the exact color. The next female bird I get will most likely be a Conure and I want to name her Bonnie.

I named my bird Mumbles the Mutant Chicken, since he has not objected it will stay that. He is a moluccan cockatoo I bought for 300$ US. from his previous owner when he was 8 years old.

I am going to name my female hand reared Cockatoo "Pookie" She will be named sfter she is born and weened, after the memory of my cat Pookie who sadly passed of old age a while ago. You can say the name softly and it is different and cute. I think the two syllable name and ending in e sound anamles like, or this just may aply to dogs.

Hi Jayne,

Pookie is a great name and it's sweet that you want to honor your old friend by continuing their legacy. You're right that shorter names work best for dogs. They can pay attention to them more easily and they can differentiate them better from other words. With parrots it will be similar, although there is the element of mimicry, which has always been a matter for debate. Thanks again for the recommendation!
