Shiba Inu

The shiba inu is an agile dog with a robust chest and short hair. Small in size and very similar to akita inu, one of its closest relatives. Although we can see clear differences in their appearance: the shiba inu is much smaller and unlike the akita inu their snout is finer. We also noticed small pointed ears and almond eyes. Sexual dimorphism is minimal. Males usually measure about 40 centimeters to the cross and weigh about 11-15 kg in weight. Meanwhile, the female usually measures about 37 centimeters to the cross and weigh between 9 and 13 kilograms.

Each dog has particular characteristics and behavioral traits, regardless of its breed. However, we can set some general attributes that usually accompany shiba inu dogs.

They are usually quiet and independent but not always. Since, they are excellent watchdogs that will enjoy patrolling the terrain of the house and warning us in the presence of any intruder. They usually stick to owners who show loyalty and affection. They are somewhat shy with strangers, with whom they will be passive and distant. We can add that they are a somewhat nervous, excitable and playful dog, even a little mischievous.

As for the relations of shiba inu to other dogs, this will depend to a large extent on the socialization they have received. If we have dedicated time to this process we can enjoy a social dog that will coexist with other members of its species without problems.

There is usually controversy over the relationship between the shiba inu and the children. We can affirm that if we educate our dog correctly, there will be no problem. But, being a dog so excitable and nervous we must teach our children how to play and interact with them to avoid any mishaps. It is important to maintain stability within the home, something that will positively affect all members of the household.

To start, you should be clear that when adopting a shiba inu puppy to spend time on the socialization process, to enjoy a sociable dog without fear. The education of shiba inu is not especially difficult if we devote at least 10-15 minutes a day since they are rather intelligent dogs. This of course requires a dedicated owner and somewhat experienced in basic education and socialization.

The life expectancy of this breed is something that is not agreed upon. Some experts mark the age of 15 years, while others make up to 18. Still, we can confirm that one shiba inu lived to 26 years. Of course, providing the proper care and a happy life will greatly increase their life expectancy.

They are particularly clean dogs that often remind us of a cat and their hygiene. They can spend hours grooming and enjoy being brushed by your closest relatives. Brush your shiba inu 2 or 3 times a week, to eliminate dead hair and also prevent the appearance of insects.

As their hair changes it will be essential to increase the frequency of brushing by providing good nutrition. We recommend bathing them every two months, unless they are especially dirty. This is because the shiba inu has a very thick inner layer of hair that in addition to protecting them, conserves an essential natural fat. Excess water and soap will eliminate this natural protection of the skin. In the cooler times of winter we recommend using dry shampoos to prevent your shiba inu from staying wet for too long.

You should walk them at least 2 or 3 times a day for around 20 to 30 minutes. We also recommend practicing active exercise with them, without using force of course. This will help develop their muscles and relieve stress.
