Everybody knows that adopting a dog means adding a new member to our family and home; this entails a great responsibility, but also a deep emotional bond that will begin to grow right when you meet. No matter what kind of pet we adopt, it's always important to choose a good name. This is especially true in the case of dogs, since their name is a key tool in their training process.
Since deciding on a name can be a bit difficult, here at AnimalWised we've compiled a list of our favorite options. In this article you'll find a selection of names for female dogs. Look around, get inspired and choose the name that best fits your pet.
How to choose a good name for a dog
There are so many good names for female dogs out there that it can be quite hard to know which one will work best for your pet. You can choose according to your own personal taste, but you can also take into account other factors like her size, physical traits or personality.
There are certain guidelines that will make this task easier. You must consider that a dog's name has to be able to catch her attention and thus allow her training. We recommend:
- Choose a short name, or at least a name that can be shortened to two syllables. This way, it'll be easier to learn and training will be faster.
- Don't choose names that sound like orders or common daily words. Don't call your dog "Mo", since she might get confused with the word "No".
Once we've established that, you can make sure you pick a good name for your female dog by taking into account other aspects. Do some research and get to know her.
It's a good idea to pay attention to your pet's size, behavior or distinguishing characteristics - like spots or marks - and name them after those. You can also go the fun route and choose a name that directly contradicts your dog's aspect; call a big St Bernard "Tiny", or a black dog "Bianca".
