Himalayan Cat

The Himalayan cat, also known as Himmie cat, is a man-made bred cat. This cat is a cross between the Persian cat, evident in its physical characteristics and the Siamese cat, from which it has inherited its characteristic patterns. The combination of these two predecessors offers us a unique, elegant and very beautiful feline.

The Himalayan cat originated in the 30s from Sweden, however, it began to be officially recognised as a breed in the 60s. This cat inherited its name from the himalayan rabbit, to which it greatly resembles.

Physical appearance

The Himalayan cat, as we have mentioned before, has the characteristics of the Siamese mantle and the long hair from the Persian physiognomy. Many people see a Himalayan cat and assume it’a a Siamese cat with long hair, but it is in fact a cat of Persian sub-race.

These cats are medium-sized, compact, robust, just like Persian cats. The round head is framed by small, separated ears that give importance to its characteristic blue eyes. The face appears very flat due to its flat nose.

The mantle of the Himalayan cat is soft and can vary slightly in tone. It tonal coloring can range from brown to maroon or even blueish shades.

We can safely say that the Himalayan cat is a very intelligent and friendly cat. they are observant and have great capability to learn. This cat is considered an obedient and affectionate pet.

These cats do not usually meow like other cats do and they can adapt well small apartments.

In addition to the above, it is a loyal and calm friend. From time to time this cat does enjoy exercising, but will be equally happy laying with you on the sofa.

Health

The most common diseases in Himalayan cats are:

  • Choking and intestinal obstruction (due to formation of hairballs)

  • Mandibular and facial alterations.

And like any other cat breed it is important that you feed your cat well and pay a visit to your vet regularly for vaccinations and general check ups.

Take care

It is very important to pay attention to your Himalayan cats hair. It should be bathed every 15 or 30 days, which we recommend doing with shampoo and conditioner prescribed by your vet. You should also brush its hair daily to avoid tangles and knots. Follow these tips to keep your cat healthy, bright and beautiful.
