History brands these dog breeds severely. However, we must ask ourselves whether Rottweilers are dangerous, and how. Are they truly a risk? What if you have children at home? Is it simply because of how some Rottweilers have been trained?

The history of the Rottweiler

We have traces of the ancestors of the Rottweilers from back in Roman times, when they were guard dogs which were also used to drive cattle. Upon their arrival in what is now Germany, the Romans crossed them with native dogs in the area, which would later have a town named Rottweil.

This is where the "Rottweil Butcher's Dog" was born. This breed got their name not for slaughtering anyone, but because it dogs became popular with butchers, helping them control the more aggressive bulls and cows. Just like their ancestors had done, in time Rottweilers also began to guard and protect homes.

Later, the functions of Rottweilers as working dogs expanded; they becamepolice dogs, rescue dogs and finally companion dogs, the best place for them.

Unfortunately, to this day, people abuse and profit from the Rottweiler's natural strength. Dogfighting, sparring or simply mistreatment, cruelty or neglect have been been the causes behind the behavioral problems many people associate with Rottweilers.

Training a Rottweiler

All dogs, regardless of their size or breed, should receive the first and most basic part of their education, which is puppy socialization.

This is a process in which you teach the dog to relate with the outside world including other dogs, animals, people, objects and a long list of other possibilities. Getting the puppy used to sounds and various stimuli will prevent your dog from becoming fearful and anxious in the future.

If you don't educate and socialize your Rottweiler puppy, you risk their becoming fearful and even aggressive in certain situations, as they won't be able to properly measure risks and threats.

If to a lack of proper socialization we add violence and abuse, the result is certain. Your Rottweiler - or any other dog - will suffer from serious behavioral problems, which will obviously increase the chances of having a serious accident.

On the other hand, if you fulfill the five freedoms of animal welfare and strive to educate your best friend in a responsible and positive way, you will enjoy a sociable, affectionate and stable dog.

What are Rottweilers like?

While Rottweilers are intelligent, brave and obedient dogs, they are also dogs with great physical strength. This is basically the reason why in most countries, Rottweilers are considered potentially dangerous dogs.

This means that even if they are not aggressive by nature, their powerful bite and muscular body make them capable of killing and thus a bigger risk, just like any other animal with these characteristics.

It is very important to remember that this kind of legislation and lists encourages breed discrimination and non-adoption; if you're aware of how to properly train and care for a Rottweiler, you shouldn't be discouraged.

Are Rottweilers dangerous dogs, then?

Any professional will give you the same answer: Rottweilers are not dangerous dogs by nature. The danger is in the education and training that the animal receives.

Consider the following tips before you adopt a Rottweiler:

  • Socialize your dog starting from when it is a puppy.
  • Spend time with your pet, as a lonely dog will be unhappy.
  • Always use positive reinforcement to educate your dog. Choke collars or violence are totally unwise and inappropriate, and they will result in backlash.
  • Walk your dog two to three times a day.
  • During the walk you should allow the Rottweiler some freedom, especially if it is stressed. You can help relieve your dog's stress by allowing it to smell and explore in a calm manner.
  • Exercise with your dog if you think you it needs it.
  • Teach your dog basic training commands that are useful for its safety. "Sit", "stay" or "heel" are a few examples of what your dog should learn.
  • Fulfill their needs at all times and go to the vet if necessary.

If you follow all these tips, your Rottweiler will not be an aggressive dog under any circumstances.

Covering all aspects of its daily life will have a very positive impact on the animal's welfare and happiness, and you will be able to have your best friend in the world by your side.
