Very Large Dog Breed: Great Dane
The Great Dane dog breed is commonly known for being one of the largest dog breeds in the world. This extra large dog breed can measure up to roughly 80 cm although females are often smaller. Great Danes usually weigh up to roughly 62 kilograms, carrying a firm and muscular body. They are known for being great guard dogs that require a lot of space and exercise. If they do not receive enough of the aforementioned, these dogs can become both stressed and anxious.
Have you heard of now deceased "Giant George"? Giant George was a blue Great Dane previously recognized by the Guinness Book Of World Records for being the tallest dog ever: measuring up to 110 cm, weighing 111 kilograms.
Large dog breeds long hair: St. Bernard
By far one of the cutest and most famous large dog breeds is the St. Bernard. Ever heard of the movie Beethoven? This movie gave rise to the popularity of this large dog breed as being incredibly kind and loving with children.
St. Bernard dogs need a lot of space to run and expel energy. A St.Bernard also needs a guardian who recognizes its needs as an extra large dog breed. These dogs are incredibly strong, eat A LOT and tend to slobber. They require daily brushing as well as a regular eye and mouth cleaning regime.

Large dog breeds short hair: Neapolitan mastiff
The oldest Neapolitan Mastiffs were brought from India to Greece at the request of Alexander the Great around 300 BC.
Heavy, stocky and solid, Neapolitan Mastiffs are incredibly loyal large dog breeds. They are great watchdogs and are equally affectionate. This extra large dog breed requires large food portions and frequent baths (every 3 or 4 weeks). As with all of the large dog breeds, this breeds needs space to exercise and an owner who knows how to train it accordingly. These very large dog breeds can measure up to 70 cm in height and weigh roughly 60 kilograms. Additionally, they can eat a whopping 1.5 kgs of food in just a day!

Giant dog breed: Leonberger
Of German origin, the Leonberger has long brown hair. It is a balanced, large and muscular mountain dog that can reach up to 80 cm and 75 kgs. This large German dog breed has a calm temperament and an imposing presence.
They too require a lot of exercise but can sometimes be lazy. As it is a large dog breed with long hair, like the St. Bernard, it requires daily brushing. These affectionate dogs, if left alone for too long, can suffer from separation anxiety and stress.
Large dog breeds for apartments: Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is a British breed that is believed to come from both the English mastiff and English bulldog. With its imposing presence and dark face, this dog is an incredibly intelligent guard dog. They are moderately active and incredibly faithful and loyal.
Bullmastiffs can measure between 60 - 68 cm in height with a weight between 50 and 60 kgs. They are prone to obesity, therefore, they need to be offered an appropriate diet. They should be bathed monthly and brushed roughly every 2-3 weeks.

Large dog breed from Japan: Tosa Inu
Also known as Tosa Ken, the Tosa Inu can weigh up to 100 kgs and measure a minimum of 60 centimeters in height. Provided that this large dog breed is trained correctly, it can be incredibly friendly, loving and social.
Tosa Inus require an owners who knows how to train and handle this strong dog breed. If this dog is not socialized correctly, it can become aggressive.
Cutest large dog breed: Newfoundland
The Newfoundland is a large and easy to train dog of Canadian origin. They can weigh a maximum of 70 kgs (males) with a height of between 60 and 80 cm. These loyal and loving dogs love water and are considered great life guards.
These dogs, as with most dogs, hate being alone and isolated and require long walks. If they are not educated and socialized correctly they can become both destructive and dominant.

Rare large dog breed: Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is a hybrid large dog breed that retains the wolf pack mentality with the training capacity of a German Shepherd. They measure up to about 65 cm in height carrying a weight of 25 kg. They have strong hunting impulses and require an experienced owner who truly understands their mentality and attitude.
This dog breed tend to bite objects regularly and therefore require teethers. In addition, they need daily brushing. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog breed are prone to hip dysplasia in old age.

Large dog breed from Brazil: Brazilian Mastiff
The Brazilian Mastiff,also know as Fila Brasileno, is a mix between a Mastiff and Dogo. This large dog breed has an incredibly strong sense of smell and is incredibly powerful. In ancient times they were used to hunt escaping slaves. They usually weight a minimum of 55 kgs with a height of about 70 centimeters.
These dogs need to be well trained as they can become aggressive when threatened by strangers.

Ancient large dog breed: Dogue De Bordeaux
Of French origin, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a large dog breed that tends to be very attached and loyal to its family. They usually measure up to about 65 centimeters in height carrying an astounding weight of 65 kilograms. Incredibly meek and protective with children, their family is their best friend.
This dog breed, also known as the French Mastiff, are prone to heart murmurs and skin problems. These health problems can be avoided with proper hygiene and deworming. Bordeaux Mastiffs require a lot of exercise in order to develop correctly.

Large dog breed: Tibetan Mastiff
Watchdog and defender of Chinese origin, the Tibetan Mastiff has a bark similar to that of a lion. Used by the Assyrians as a war dog, it had a great diffusion with the conquests of Romans all over the Mediterranean.
Incorruptible, fierce and fearful with strangers, the Tibetan Mastiff measures up to 80 centimeters and weighs about 70 kilograms. Although it is a loyal dog and great with children, they do have a tendency to become aggressive with people and animals they do not recognize.

The Komondor is a guard dog from Hungary. This dog is incredibly unique in appearance as it has thick dreadlocks of hair that cover its whole body. Independent and stable, this dog measures at about 75 centimeters and weighs up to 60 kg.
This large dog breed is known for being territorial and protective and can at times react aggressively when provoked. Training and socialization is compulsory if you choose to adopt this breed. Komondors are prone to hip dysplasia.

The Scottish hound, also known as Scottish Deerhound is a breed endemic to the United Kingdom. Many believe that this large dog breed stem from greyhounds, due mainly to certain morphological similarities. In the Middle Ages, this dog was used for deer hunting and was exclusive to the richer minority.
The Scottish Deerhound measures up to 76 centimeters at the withers with a weight of about 45.5 kilograms. This large dog breed is known for being calm, affectionate, sociable and gentle.
